Final Thoughts on Mexico

Well, we loved Mexico. It’s not like we’ve never been there before.  But we hadn’t been to Mexico City and Zihau.  We were blown away by Mexico City’s beauty, the art everywhere you look, the history, the sophistication of it, the friendliness of the people and the great restaurants!  As I’ve said before we have a history with the country.  We got married there and have a soft spot for it.

Zihautanejo – sitting on a beautiful bay with a stunning white sand beach, it still is not on the radar as a major destination.  People know it from The Shawshank Redemption and only one good friend has been there; no one else had heard of it.  And that’s a good thing.  But don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of Americans there.  It seems to attract expats and retirees.  Maybe it’s the weather or maybe it’s the value of the dollar vs. the peso.  At any rate, it’s laid back, low-key with no Gucci’s or Gaps but it has a lot of character and if you want to do some damage shopping, trust me, you can!  We loved the people in Zihau – no attitudes.

And, the hotels.  Again as in Turkey – 5 stars on both.  If we wanted these hotels in Europe they would be out of our reach.

I learned a lot on this trip, thanks mainly to Alvaro, our guide in Mexico City.  We’ll be getting a piece of his sculpture and I’ll share it with you when it arrives.  Besides what I talked about in previous posts I didn’t know that:

Mexico has 32 states; each one uniquely different

I learned a couple of new words:

Tope – speed bump!  and there are plenty of them!                                                           Totopo – tortilla chips; never heard the word before

Here’s some of the souvenirs we bought to add to the collection:

Water Buffalo handmade of wool by the ladies of Chiapas and sold on the street in Coyoacan
Day of the Dead Lady bought in a covered market in Coyoacan
Hand Drawn Tetragram found in the covered market of Coyoacan.
Roy's Calendar
Roy in his lucha libre mask!

And, here are some parting shots:

Sitting area off lobby of Las Alcobas
Shoe Shine Stand in the DF
Artwork at Cinco Sentidos
Zihau
Grand Suite at Cinco Sentidos
Moon Over Zihau

I really need to learn Spanish because the next big trip is Spain – the Costa Brava and Madrid!  But that’s not until September and there’s a whole summer stretching out ahead including a Memorial Day Weekend getaway in Washington, DC, so please keep reading 2 at the bar.

P.S. We’ll be worshipping at the temple of Bruce Springsteen on Monday night so stay tuned for my review – do you really think it will be a bad one??

Until then, see you at the bar….

    1. Hi Terie! Springsteen is my hero! We love him. It should be incredible – he plays for 3 hours. I’ll be dragging on Tuesday! I speak really bad Spanish. I should learn.
