The Old and the New

Fan Pier.  Years in development, us skeptial Bostonians never thought it would happen.  But it did, it’s spectacular and a great place to be on a summer night in Boston with the skyline as a backdrop.  Take a walk along Fan Pier, go to the ICA, have dinner at any number of restaurants ranging from mexican to Legal Seafood, Del Friscos, Strega, Jerry Remy’s and Anthony’s Pier Four.  Yes, remember that one?  That’s where we started our July 3rd celebration.

We were on our way to Sam’s with our friends J and M and free parking at Anthony’s was the catch.  Park at Anthony’s, go in, have a drink and then leave.  When was the last time you were at Anthony’s?  It’s stuck in it’s glory years; a blast from the past.  At one time, it was the place to go-a destination restaurant. Pictures of the owners with celebrities cover the walls and I’m pretty sure what few diners were in the restaurant were tourists.  I can’t tell you about the food.  We sat on the patio and had a drink.  But I can tell you that we were served drinks without napkins, the table wobbled and it wasn’t the table, it was the floor boards that need to be fixed and the waiter basically could have cared less.  The one thing Anthony’s does have is a valuable piece of property and a to-die-for view.  So we had our drinks and headed over to Sam’s where we had a reservation.

Situated above Louis, the very chi-chi retail store, Sam’s is small, has a great buzz and a commanding view.  It has a patio but on July 3rd there was a private party and we weren’t allowed access.  That was fine.  We had a corner table and it felt like we were outside.

A bottle of Vermentino which was the wine we enjoyed on a trip to Sardinia with J and M.  A dozen oysters and a split entree of fried flounder over fried green tomato with Maine shrimp and an uni butter sauce; chicken croquettes, peppercorn burgers and fries.  There were no complaints.  We finished off with a delicous brownie sundae.

A good way to start the July 4th holiday!
